Year 7 Virtual Induction
A warm welcome from Miss Marshall, ADHT responsible for Admissions
Dear Parents, Guardians and Year 6 Students,
I hope that you and your families are keeping well and safe during this time.
It is my absolute pleasure to offer you a warm welcome to The Crest Academy. I am the Head of Year 7 and it is my duty to look after the wellbeing, academic progress and pastoral care for each and every Year 7 student.
We have been working very hard to prepare for the arrival of our newest Year 7 students and we will shortly be welcoming students into their Virtual Induction Week where you will be able to meet other new Year 7 students, teachers from the English, maths, science, music and PE departments, Mrs Fernandes the Head Teacher and other key members of The Crest Academy school, including me.
Whilst we may be experiencing some unusual times currently, at The Crest Academy we are ready to help you transition into the next exciting stage in your life as you enter into secondary school. We want to make this an exciting and reassuring experience for you so that when the time comes for you to arrive at the school you are ready and raring to go.
Our Year 7 students are incredibly lucky to have both a Hear of Year and a Pastoral Manager. This means that all of our Year 7 students are well supported by both an academic member of staff and a non-teaching member of staff. Supporting our Year 7 students in the transition and throughout their first year at The Crest Academy is our primary goal.
You should have received online admissions paperwork to fill in, which is an important process in your child joining The Crest Academy. Please ensure that you fill it in and send it back promptly.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us. Here are the important contact details you will need:

- Kim Brooker (Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead) firstname.lastname@example.org
- Sophie Hale (Head of Year 7) email@example.com

2. What will the school day look like?
3. How often will my son / daughter receive homework?
Your son / daughter will receive homework from all of their subjects once a week as per their homework timetable. Subject teachers will explain the tasks in lessons and will answer any questions your son / daughter might have. All homework tasks will then be uploaded to our online software: SatchelOne. Your son / daughter will be given a username and password to access their homework in the first week of the academic year. As a parent, you will also be provided with a username and password so that you can support your child with completing their homework.
4. My son / daughter speaks English as an additional language, how will you support their English skills?
On arrival to The Crest Academy, your son / daughter will complete the following tests:
- Reading Age test
- CATs test
Once the test results are collated, we will have a clear picture of what your child is able to do and the areas we need to develop. Support will then be put in place to ensure your child makes the necessary progress to fulfil his / her potential. The support provided will be as follows:
- ESOL lessons four times a week to develop your son / daughter’s knowledge of the English language
- Phonics lessons: These lessons will support your son / daughter in learning how to read and write
- Lexia: This is online software which addresses the development of oral language, reading, spelling, and writing skills for students who are learning English
- Accelerated reader: This is a computer-based program which allows us to monitor your son / daughter’s independent reading practice
