Miss Pond shortlisted for Global Teacher Prize!

15 December 2017

The Crest Academy’s very own Eartha Pond has been named in the top 50 shortlist for the prestigious Global Teacher Prize, an award presented annually to an exceptional teacher who has made an outstanding contribution to their profession.

A previous winner of Sports Teacher of the Year, professional footballer, vice chair of her community council, trustee of her local youth club and a prolific fundraiser, Eartha undoubtedly fits the bill. At The Crest, Eartha has put in place and now runs the Girls Allowed Club, a sports club that aims to empower young women and introduce them to a range of sporting activities in a fun, relaxed setting. She is also an active member of her community, raising more than £100,000 for Grenfell Tower fire survivors. But out of all of these achievements, there is one that Eartha is most proud of:

“Teaching kids. There’s nothing like making a student believe that they can achieve something. That is the biggest prize for me.”

Eartha was contacted by the Global Teacher Prize earlier this year and informed that she had been nominated. At the end of November, she received the fantastic news that she had been shortlisted along with 49 other inspiring teachers from all over the world, including three from the UK.

“I couldn’t tell anyone that I’d been chosen… and I still don’t know who nominated me! It just feels like a fantastic achievement to be chosen from 34,000 applicants.”

In one way or another, all of the finalists have made an impact in their schools and within the wider community. While Eartha was thrilled to be recognised for her own work, she was also glad to see the teaching profession in general being recognised and honoured.

“I want to congratulate all teachers for the work that they do. We’re nurturing people’s children and inspiring them academically and as young people. It’s not easy, but it is certainly worthwhile.”

The chosen 50 teachers will now be reviewed by the Global Teacher Prize Academy, a panel made up of headteachers, educational experts, commentators, journalists, public officials, entrepreneurs, company directors and scientists from around the world. The top 10 teachers will then be selected in February and will be flown to Dubai in March for a glamorous award ceremony where the winner will be announced.

We’re thrilled that Eartha has received this well-deserved recognition and are keeping our fingers and toes crossed for February!
